In 2010, Professor Marescaux led the way receiving an award from the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) for “his surgical career accomplishments”. In 2012, the “Career Development Award” was granted by the SAGES to Dr. Silvana Perretta. It is now Dr. Joël LEROY’s turn to win the 2013 SAGES Pioneer in Surgical Endoscopy Award, one of the most prestigious American distinctions. Dr. Joël Leroy works for the IHU (Institute for image-guided minimally invasive surgery) and as such, he is one of the IRCAD’s key Faculty members to be awarded such a distinction. The ceremony took place in Baltimore during the SAGES annual meeting on April 17, 2013.
The SAGES Award Committee and Board of Directors decided to distinguish Dr. Joël Leroy’s professional career. His works allowed to significantly spur minimally invasive surgery in the management of colorectal cancer.
Created in 1995, this award is considered one of the SAGES’s most prestigious distinctions. Dr. Joël Leroy is the first French surgeon to be awarded such an American distinction which celebrates his career.
Dr. Joël Leroy, who has become world famous for his innovative works in colorectal surgery, performed a world premiere in natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery in June 2012, as part of the Strasbourg’s IHU program.
