Rwanda was chosen as the home to IRCAD Africa as it offered a propitious environment for several reasons:
- Governance: Rwanda commitment to invest in health is a key factor in making it the home to IRCAD Africa. Moreover, Rwanda’s Ministry of Health is already invested in advancing minimally invasive surgery procedures through diverse programs. This is preparing the ground for the establishment of IRCAD Africa in Rwanda.
- Localization: Rwanda’s geographic location in the heart of Africa makes it accessible for the sub-Saharan population.
- Environment: Rwanda has a reputation for being one of the cleanest and safest countries in Africa.
The objective of this new Institute is to become the largest African center for training and research in minimally invasive surgery, and to improve surgery standards in Africa by closing the technological and knowledge gap.
