On November 28, 2019, Professor Jacques Marescaux received the 2019 Franco-Brazilian Personality of the Year Prize awarded by the France-Brazil Chamber of Commerce in Rio de Janeiro, in front of an audience of 500 people from the Franco-Brazilian economic world.
Professor Marescaux was rewarded for his action in the service of economic dynamism in the field of surgery in Brazil. Thanks to its presence in Barretos in the State of São Paulo since 2011 and in Rio de Janeiro since 2017, IRCAD has been able to attract a network of industrial partners, giants in the field of minimally invasive surgery, to Brazil. In parallel, a Research and Development team has been created in Barretos to promote and accelerate minimally invasive surgery technology transfer.
His pioneering vision of surgery and his desire to disseminate the best surgical techniques to surgeons around the world, and in particular to Brazilian surgeons, were applauded. More than 11,000 surgeons have already been trained at IRCAD’s two mirror institutes in Brazil since 2011.
Professor Marescaux’s action was solemnly welcomed by Mr. Nour Bouhassoun, President of the France-Brazil Chamber of Commerce and President of Michelin South America, which employs no less than 8,500 people. It should be noted that France is the leading foreign investor in Brazil, with more than 500,000 jobs in French companies operating in the country.
Each year, the Franco-Brazilian Personality of the Year Award honors a French or Brazilian personality who has contributed to the development of relations between the two countries in the socio-economic, political, environmental, media, cultural, philanthropic or scientific fields.
